Pear

Pear, tree (Pyrus communis) of the rose family; also, the oval-shaped, soft-fleshed fruit produced by the tree. Bartlett, Bosc, Anjou, and Seckel are among the fruit's hundreds of varieties. Pears are eaten fresh, dried, or canned, and the wood of the tree is used in cabinetmaking. A close relation of the apple, pear trees are occasionally cultivated as ornamentals.
