Pediatrics, branch of medicine concerned with the care of children. This care starts with the newborn, especially with premature, babies for whom intensive care is required. An important aspect is the recognition and treatment of congenital diseases or disease acquired during development of the embryo or fetus. Pediatricians also deal with infectious disease, growth or development disorders, mental retardation, diabetes, asthma, and epilepsy.
