Penal colony

Penal colony, overseas settlement in which convicts were isolated from society. The forced labor that was part of their punishment was often used for colonial development. All colonial powers had penal colonies, as had Russia in Siberia. Britain transported large numbers of convicts to the American colonies and to Australia.
