Samuel Pepys
Pepys, Samuel (1633–1703), English diarist. Although he was a successful reforming naval administrator and president of the Royal Society (1684–85), it is his talent in recording contemporary affairs and the events in his own private life for which he is famed today. His diary, written in cipher (1660–69) was not decoded and published until 1825.
