Persepolis

Persepolis, ancient ceremonial capital of the Achaemenian kings of Persia, lying 30 mi (48 km) northeast of Shiraz, southwestern Iran. It flourished under Darius I (d. 486 B.C.) and his successors but was later destroyed by Alexander the Great in 330. In 1971 the 2,500th anniversary of the Iranian monarchy was celebrated among the ruins of the city.
