John Joseph Pershing
Pershing, John Joseph (1860–1948), U.S. general. After distinguished service in the Indian Wars (1886, 1890–91), the Spanish-American War (1898), and the Philippines (1899–1903), he was promoted to brigadier general (1906). He led a punitive expedition to Mexico against U.S. Villa (1916) and a year later became commander of the World War I Expeditionary Force in Europe. In 1919 he became general of the armies, and he was chief of staff from 1921 until his 1924 retirement.
