Peterborough
Peterborough (pop. 61,000), city in southern Ontario, Canada, on the Otonabee River. Known for the Trent Canal—the tallest hydraulic lift lock in the world, 65 ft (20 m)—Peterborough is also a center for manufacturing and farming. Located 70 miles northeast of Toronto, the provincial capital, it was settled in the 1820s, mostly by Irish immigrants.
