Pietermaritzburg
Pietermaritzburg, also called Maritzburg (pop. 126,300), capital of Kwazulu Natal Province in northeastern South Africa. The city was founded by Boers (Dutch settlers in South Africa) after a Zulu defeat (1839). It is known for manufacturing, higher education, and its parks and gardens.
