Pontius Pilate

Pilate, Pontius, Roman procurator of Judea (A.D. 26–36) who ordered the crucifixion of Christ, afterward washing his hands to declaim responsibility. Hated by the Jews, he was recalled to Rome after his behavior provoked a riot that had to be put down by troops.
