Pineapple

Pineapple, short-stemmed plant (Ananas comosus) with pointed, spiny leaves. At the tip there is a dense head of flowers that form a single compound fruit, the sweet, juicy pineapple Columbus found in the West Indies. Pineapples were transported from mainland South America to European colonies in Africa and Asia. The British developed new varieties in greenhouses. Hawaii's pineapples, now 75% of the world's crop, came from England via Australia.
