Pinzón

Pinzón, family of 3 Spanish brothers, navigators who took part with Columbus in discovering America. Martín Alonso (1440?–93) commanded the Pinta; he left Columbus after reaching Cuba and unsuccessfully tried to reach Spain first. Francisco Martín (c. 1441–93?) served under his brother on the Pinta. Vicente Yáñez (c. 1460–1524?) commanded the Niña and stayed with Columbus; he went on to discover Brazil (1500) and to explore the coasts of Central and northern South America.
