Pittsburgh



Pittsburgh (pop. 366,800), steel-producing city in southwestern Pennsylvania, seat of Allegheny County, and the state's 2nd-largest city. Settled in 1758 as Fort Pitt and incorporated as a city in 1816, it now occupies over 55 sq mi (142 sq km) around its business center, the Golden Triangle, where the Allegheny and Monongahela rivers meet to form the Ohio. The city's economic wealth is based on steel mills, coke from Allegheny coal, pig iron, glass, and various manufactured products. The University of Pittsburgh and the Carnegie Institute are among its educational institutions.
