Placentia



Placentia (pop. 2,000), town in southeastern Newfoundland, Canada. Founded in 1662 by the French who used it as headquarters for their troops fighting against the British, it became a British possession in 1713. Its old ruins and proximity to salmon fishing waters make it a popular tourist area.
