Plattsburgh



Plattsburgh (pop. 21,057), largest city in northeastern N.Y. Located on Lake Champlain 22 mi (35 km) south of the Canadian border, it is named after Zephaniah Platt who founded it in 1784. During the War of 1812 it was the scene of a decisive battle between the British and Americans which resulted in U.S. victory. Plattsburgh's economy relies on its many industries, which include the manufacturing of wood and paper products, dairy products, and plastics. Plattsburgh was a village from 1785 to 1902, when it became a city.
