Plautus
Plautus (c.254–184 B.C.), Roman writer of comedies, 21 of which have survived. He based them on Greek New Comedy, especially Menander, but adapted them to Roman tastes and situations, and added his own brand of lively, bawdy humor. Popular in his time, he influenced William Shakespeare, Ben Jonson, and Molière, among others.
