Pledge of Allegiance
Pledge of Allegiance, promise of loyalty to the United States. It is recited as follows:
I pledge allegiance to the flag of the United States of America and to the Republic for which it stands, one Nation under God, indivisible, with liberty and justice for all.
The pledge was originally written in 1892 by Francis Bellamy (1855–1931) for the National Public School Celebration of the 400th anniversary of Christopher Columbus's discovery of America. The pledge under went several slight revisions in 1923, 1924, and 1954. In 1942, Congress officially sanctioned the recitation of the pledge to be a customary part of flag use.
