Popular music, term used to describe several kinds of music that are not classical. Classical music includes symphonies, operas, and ballet works performed by an orchestra. Popular music includes rock and roll, country and folk music, jazz, and other styles and blendings of styles. It is called “popular” because it is usually appreciated by a large number of the general public.
