Port-au-Prince

Port-au-Prince (pop. 738,000), capital, largest city, and leading port of Haiti. It stands on a sheltered bay facing the Caribbean Sea. In spite of local industries, including textile, flour, and sugar milling, some imposing buildings, and a modern airport, the city is one of the Western Hemisphere's poorest capitals. French colonists founded Port-au-Prince in 1749.
