Porto



Porto, or Oporto (pop. 327,400), second largest city in Portugal. Situated on the Douro River near its mouth at the Atlantic Ocean, Porto was founded during the Roman Empire and several of its medieval landmarks, including a cathedral, survive today. Porto is the major commercial and industrial hub of northern Portugal and is famous for its port wines. Fishing and food processing also contribute greatly to the city's economic base.
