Port-of-Spain (pop. 51,100), capital and largest city of Trinidad and Tobago. Situated on the northwest coast of the island of Trinidad, Port-of-Spain was founded by the Spanish around 1560 and was briefly the capital of the Federation of the West Indies (1958–62), a group of British-owned Caribbean islands. It is a major agricultural export center for the nation and the southern Caribbean region.
