Gaspar de Portolá
Portolá, Gaspar de (1723?–?84), Spanish colonizer of California. In 1769, as governor of the Californias, he mounted an expedition from Mexico that founded San Diego and Monterey. He was governor of Puebla, Mexico, from 1776.
