Possum

Possum, tree-dwelling mammal of the family Phalangeridae, native to Australia and New Guinea. There are about 40 species of possums, ranging in weight from 1/2 oz (14 grams) to 11 lb (5 kg). They are nocturnal animals, foraging through forests and garbage cans for their food. As with other marsupials, the babies are born prematurely and are nurtured in the mothers' pouches. Their practice of lying absolutely still when frightened gives rise to the term “playing possum.”
