Proton



Proton, elementary particle having a positive charge equivalent to the negative charge of the electron but possessing a mass approximately 1,837 times as great. A member of the baryon class of elementary particles, the proton was discovered in 1919 by Ernest Rutherford. The proton is, in effect, the nucleus of the hydrogen atom. Every atomic nucleus contains at least one proton.
