Puget Sound

Puget Sound, irregular inlet of the Pacific Ocean in northwestern Washington. It extends south about 100 mi (161 km) to Olympia and is navigable by large ships (U.S. navy yard at Bremerton). Seattle and Tacoma lie on its shores, and the state's fish and lumber industries are centered in the area. It was explored by George Vancouver in 1792 and named by him.
