George Mortimer Pullman
Pullman, George Mortimer (1831–97), U.S. industrialist and inventor of the first modern railroad sleeping car, the Pullman (patented 1864). In 1880 he built a model company town, Pullman, Ill. (now part of Chicago), later site of the Pullman Strike.
