Pyongyang



Pyongyang (pop. 2,000,000), capital and largest city of North Korea. It lies on the Taedong River in an important coal-mining area and is a major industrial center producing iron, steel, machinery, and textiles. An ancient settlement, it was the capital of the Choson kingdom in the 3rd century B.C. The city was severely damaged during the Korean War.
