Quebec Conference
Quebec Conference (1864), conference in the city of Quebec that laid the foundations of the Canadian Confederation. Representatives from the British provinces in North America produced a series of 72 resolutions outlining a centralized federal union. This union was desirable in that it promoted better defense and economic growth, and eased friction between French- and English-speaking groups. The Quebec Conference became the basis of the British North America Act (1867), which created the Dominion of Canada.
