Queens

Queens, largest and second most populous of the 5 boroughs that make up the city of New York. Queens is located at the western end of Long Island and is linked to Manhattan by an intricate network of tunnels and bridges crossing the East River. A largely middle-class area of small homes, Queens includes such residential neighborhoods as Forest Hills, Flushing, and Kew Gardens, as well as the industrial and commercial centers of Long Island City and Astoria, directly opposite Manhattan. In the southern part of the borough are a racecourse (Aqueduct), several beaches, and the John F. Kennedy International Airport. Flushing Meadow was the site of the 1939–40 and 1964–65 World's Fairs. Queens was founded by the Dutch in 1635, became part of the British province of New York in 1683, and became part of New York City in 1898.
