Sir Henry Raeburn

Raeburn, Sir Henry (1756–1823), Scottish painter. He was a lesser known portraitist than his famous English contemporary, Sir Joshua Reynolds. He painted directly on canvas with strong brush strokes and without the assistance of preliminary sketch marks. These portraits, mostly of well-to-do Scots, also were painted so that light and color produced dramatic effects.
