Sir Stamford Raffles
Raffles, Sir Stamford (1781–1826), British colonial administrator who re-founded the ruined city of Singapore (1819). He persuaded the British government to seize Java, which he governed from 1811 to 1815. His career was marked by his liberalism, especially in his opposition to slavery.
