Raleigh



Raleigh (pop. 150,255), capital of North Carolina and seat of Wake County. Named for the English colonizer, Sir Walter Raleigh, it was incorporated as the state capital in 1792. The city supports a variety of light industry, including the manufacture of chemicals, electronics, textiles, processed foods, and building products. It also serves as the marketing and distribution center for the surrounding agricultural region. Raleigh is the home of North Carolina State University, St. Augustine's College, Meredith College, and Shaw University. North Carolina Museum of Art was opened at Raleigh in 1955.
