Rank, military, designation of position in the military service. Often called grade when associated with salary level and lower-level personnel, rank also refers to an officer's authority. In the U.S. titles for rank include the President as commander in chief, commissioned officers, and non-commissioned officers, which include warrent officers and enlisted personnel.
