Remote sensing
Remote sensing, information-gathering process that operates independently of physical contact with the object being studied. Modern technology has developed complex forms of remote sensing through the use of electronic sensors that pick up and transmit visual images. Television is a form of remote sensing, and TV cameras are used in spacecraft to receive and translate visual data about Earth or the celestial body being studied. Satellites convey meteorologic conditions of the atmosphere or geologic conditions of the earth's surface or underground resources. Radar and sonar use sound to detect physical objects. Some sensors detect infrared (heat) rays sent out by the earth; the information is translated by computer into color images that scientists can interpret.
