Marcus Albert Reno

Reno, Marcus Albert (1834–89), U.S. Army officer during and after the Civil War. Reno was supposed to go to the aid of Colonel George A. Custer in the Battle of the Little Bighorn (1876). After Custer's defeat Reno was accused of cowardice. Reno claimed that he had been forced to retreat and was thus unable to help Custer. A military court exonerated him (1879), but one year later Reno received a dishonorable discharge for conduct unbecoming of an officer. In 1967 the Army reversed the decision and changed the record to reflect an honorable discharge.
