Rhizome
Rhizome, or rootstock, swollen horizontal underground stem of certain plants, such as ginger. The rhizome acts as an organ of perennation (ability to live over from season to season), and vegetative propagation lasts for several years. New shoots appear each spring near the scale leaves. If split, the rhizome lives on as numerous individuals.
