Rhodesian ridgeback

Rhodesian ridgeback, also called African lion hound, hunting dog that originated in southern Africa. Hunters value its ability to find and hold off lions; it is also known as a good watchdog and companion. Ridgebacks are named for the ridge of hair that grows on their backs in the opposite direction from the rest of the coat, which is yellowish to reddishbrown. They have the drooping ears typical of most hounds, stand 24–27 in (61–69 cm) high, and weigh 65–75 lb (30–34 kg).
