or Ribault Ribaut Jean
Ribaut, or Ribault, Jean (1520?–65), French mariner who helped colonize Florida. On present-day Parris Island, S.C., he set up a colony in 1562. He fled to England to escape persecution as a Huguenot. In 1565 he was shipwrecked off Florida and killed by Spanish forces.
