Right of search

Right of search, international law under which nations at war are allowed to search the vessels of neutral nations for contraband. Ships may also be searched during times of peace. Regulations regarding a ship's distance from the coast depend on the nature of the particular search. During Prohibition, some nations consented to extend the number of miles. This practice is still in effect.
