Riveting

Riveting, joining of machine or structural parts, usually plates, by rivets. Rivets are headed bolts, usually made of steel, that are passed through the plates, a second head then being formed on the plain end by pressure, hammering, or an explosive charge. Large rivets are heated for satisfactory closing. Although riveting can be automated, it is slowly being displaced by arc welding.
