Frank Robinson



Robinson, Frank (1935– ), U.S. baseball player and manager. Known as an excellent outfielder, Robinson won the Rookie of the Year award (1956) and was the first player to be named Most Valuable Player in both the National and American Leagues (1961 and 66, respectively). He played for the Cincinnati Reds (1956–65), Baltimore Orioles (1966–71), Los Angeles Dodgers (1972), California Angels (1973–74), and Cleveland Indians (1974–76). Robinson became the first African-American manager of a major league baseball team, as player-manager of the Cleveland Indians (1975–77). He also managed the San Francisco Giants (1981–84) and Baltimore Orioles (1988). Robinson was inducted to the National Baseball Hall of Fame in 1982.
