Romance languages



Romance languages, one of the main groups of the Indo-European languages. It comprises those languages derived from the vernacular Latin that was spread by Roman soldiers and colonists, and that superseded local tongues. The languages include Italian, the Rhaeto-Romanic, Provençal, French, Walloon, Spanish, Catalan, Portuguese, and Romanian. The languages share a similar vocabulary and grammatical development.
