Roman walls

Roman walls, walls constructed by the ancient Romans in what is now Germany, Romania, and northern England. They served to protect the Romans against invasion as well as to facilitate trade and the collection of taxes. The ruins of Hadrian's Wall, built c.A.D. 120, still exist today. It was built primarily of stone and had ditches both in front of the wall and behind. Forts and watchtowers were placed along the wall at regular intervals.
