Rome
Rome (pop. 43,826), city in Oneida County in central New York State. The location of important battles fought during the American Revolution, it is known as the site of the first raising of the American flag. The building of the Erie Canal began in Rome in 1817. Major industries are copper production and machinery. It is the home of the Griffiss Air Force base.
