John Ross



Ross, John (1790–1866), Cherokee chief and, from 1839, chief of the united Cherokee nation. He opposed the U.S. government's attempt to move his people west of the Mississippi River, but in 1838 he was forced to lead them to Oklahoma on a difficult journey known as the “trail of tears.”
