Sir James Clark Ross



Ross, Sir James Clark (1800–62), British polar explorer who reachedapoint farther south (78°10'S) than any explorer until 1900. He made a number of Arctic expeditions, some with his uncle, Sir John Ross, and with William Parry. He located the north magnetic pole in 1831. In the historic 1839–43 Antarctic expedition, he discovered the Ross Sea and Victoria Land.
