Ross Dependency



Ross Dependency, section of Antarctica on the Ross Sea. Science personnel are located on bases here. The base established by the U.S. explorer Richard E. Byrd in 1928 is also here. This New Zealand-administered dependency covers about 160,000 sq mi (414,000 sq km) of land uninhabited except for the bases. An ice shelf takes up approximately 130,000 sq mi (337,000 sq km). McMurdo Sound is also found within its borders.
