Carl Thomas Rowan



Rowan, Carl Thomas (1925– ), U.S. journalist and statesman. He was the first member of the National Security Council who was of African American descent. He headed the U.S. Information Agency (1964–65). Rowan has also served as ambassador to Finland (1963–64) and deputy assistant secretary of state for public affairs (1961–63). As a journalist he worked for the Minneapolis Tribune (1948–61) and the Chicago Daily News (1965–78); he has been a columnist at the Chicago Sun-Times since 1978. Rowan received Sigma Delta Chi national journalism awards in 1954, 1955, and 1966.
