Josiah Royce

Royce, Josiah (1855–1916), U.S. philosopher, a major proponent of idealism. Influenced by Hegel and Schopenhauer, his philosophy emphasized will and purpose rather than intellect, as expressed in The World and the Individual (2 vols., 1901–02). Among his other major works was The Problem of Christianity (2 vols., 1913), in which he developed his metaphysic of interpretation and community.
