Rupert's Land

Rupert's Land, vast, mineral-rich region of northwest Canada granted to the Hudson's Bay Company in 1670 by Charles II. Named for Prince Rupert (first governor of the company), it comprised the basin of Hudson Bay. In 1818, the United States acquired the portion south of the 49th parallel. In 1869–70, the remainder of the land was sold back to Canada.
