Salman Rushdie



Rushdie, Salman (1947– ), British writer and critic born in India. Rushdie has written both non-fiction and novels. His fiction often combines fantasy and folklore with realism. His works include Grimus (1975), Midnight's Children (1981), Shame (1983), Jaguar Smile: A Nicaraguan Journey (1987), and The Satanic Verses (1988), an allegorical novel that so offended Muslims that he was condemned to death by the Ayatollah Khomeini and forced into hiding. Rushdie has since published Haroun and the Sea of Stories (1990). He received the Aristeion prize for The Moor's Last Sigh (1996).
